Why go

Philim is one of the larger villages of the lower Budhi Gandaki, spread across terraced fields of millet and maize above the river. It lies a few hours above Jagat on the Manaslu Circuit, and the Tsum Valley trail leaves the main route a little further north, via Ekle Bhatti to Lokpa.

Trekkers usually pass through on the way up, but Philim is also a common overnight on the way out of Tsum, as it breaks the long walk back down the gorge. Above the village the valley narrows into a steep, little-inhabited gorge on the way to Deng.

History and culture

Philim is a Gurung village with a school and a small bazaar of shops and lodges. It lies in Chumnubri Rural Municipality, which covers both the Nubri and Tsum areas of northern Gorkha. The Department of Immigration lists Sirdibas, just below Philim, within the Tsum Valley restricted-permit area.

  • Head for Tsum

Walk via Ekle Bhatti to Lokpa, about 3-4 hours, where the Tsum trail turns east.

Risks and conditions

Seasonal risks around Philim

What this place is typically exposed to, and when. These are seasonal patterns, not a report on conditions now.

  • Landslideshigh in a typical yearJun-Sep

The Budhi Gandaki gorge is one of the more landslide-prone trekking corridors in Nepal and the monsoon months of June to September are generally avoided because of rain-slicked trails and slope failures.

    Manaslu Trek, Wikivoyage

  • River crossingshigh in a typical yearJun-Sep

The route crosses the Budhi Gandaki repeatedly on suspension bridges, and near Yaru a cantilever walkway carries the trail along the gorge wall. These are the most exposed sections when the river runs high in the monsoon.

    Manaslu Trek, Wikivoyage

  • Othermoderate in a typical yearJun-Aug

Leeches are common on the forested lower trail through the monsoon, which is one reason most trekkers avoid these months.

    Manaslu Trek, Wikivoyage

  • Floodingmoderate in a typical yearJul-Sep

Riverside settlements and trail sections beside the Budhi Gandaki sit close to the water, and monsoon rain raises the river and its side streams quickly.
