Why go

Deng is a small settlement of lodges and farms where the Budhi Gandaki gorge begins to open, about a day's walk above Jagat. It is the third night of most Manaslu Circuit itineraries, reached after crossing the river several times through bamboo and rhododendron forest.

Around Deng the culture starts to change: beyond it the trail climbs towards Rana and Bihi Phedi, and mani walls, chortens and prayer flags become frequent as the route enters the Buddhist villages of Kutang and Nubri.

History and culture

Deng lies in Chumnubri Rural Municipality in the lower part of the Kutang area. Small communities here farm maize, potatoes and barley. The trail beyond follows the old route to the Tibetan border used by traders before the modern border closures.

Seasonal risks around Deng

What this place is typically exposed to, and when. These are seasonal patterns, not a report on conditions now.

  • Landslideshigh in a typical yearJun-Sep

The Budhi Gandaki gorge is one of the more landslide-prone trekking corridors in Nepal and the monsoon months of June to September are generally avoided because of rain-slicked trails and slope failures.

    Manaslu Trek, Wikivoyage

  • River crossingshigh in a typical yearJun-Sep

The route crosses the Budhi Gandaki repeatedly on suspension bridges, and near Yaru a cantilever walkway carries the trail along the gorge wall. These are the most exposed sections when the river runs high in the monsoon.

    Manaslu Trek, Wikivoyage

  • Othermoderate in a typical yearJun-Aug

Leeches are common on the forested lower trail through the monsoon, which is one reason most trekkers avoid these months.

  • Floodingmoderate in a typical yearJul-Sep

Riverside settlements and trail sections beside the Budhi Gandaki sit close to the water, and monsoon rain raises the river and its side streams quickly.
