Why go

Namrung is a stone village at about 2,630 m where the Manaslu Circuit climbs out of the forest into the Nubri valley. It has several lodges and is the usual fourth night on the circuit, after a sustained climb from Ghap through pine, oak and rhododendron.

From here the valley opens and the high peaks of the Manaslu range begin to appear. The next day passes the villages of Lho and Shyala, with views of Manaslu itself, on the way to Samagaun.

History and culture

Nubri, the upper Budhi Gandaki valley, is home to people of Tibetan culture and Buddhist faith, with gompas, chortens and long mani walls. NTNC describes the north-western Manaslu Conservation Area, covering the Prok, Lho and Samagaun wards, as the Nubri valley. Namrung is close to Prok, from which a side trail leads to Kal Tal lake.

Things to do in Namrung

  • Walk to Samagaun

Via Lho and Shyala, about 6-7 hours, with views of Manaslu.

  • Side trip from Prok

A trail from Prok leads to Kal Tal (Kalchhuman Lake); allow an extra day and ask your guide.

Risks and conditions

Seasonal risks around Namrung

What this place is typically exposed to, and when. These are seasonal patterns, not a report on conditions now.

  • Landslideshigh in a typical yearJun-Sep

The Budhi Gandaki gorge is one of the more landslide-prone trekking corridors in Nepal and the monsoon months of June to September are generally avoided because of rain-slicked trails and slope failures.

    Manaslu Trek, Wikivoyage

  • River crossingshigh in a typical yearJun-Sep

The route crosses the Budhi Gandaki repeatedly on suspension bridges, and near Yaru a cantilever walkway carries the trail along the gorge wall. These are the most exposed sections when the river runs high in the monsoon.

    Manaslu Trek, Wikivoyage

  • Othermoderate in a typical yearJun-Aug

Leeches are common on the forested lower trail through the monsoon, which is one reason most trekkers avoid these months.

    Manaslu Trek, Wikivoyage

  • Coldmoderate in a typical yearDec-Feb

Nights are freezing in midwinter and some lodges above here shut for the season.

    Manaslu Trek, Wikivoyage

  • Snowlow in a typical yearDec-Feb

At about 2,630 m Namrung sees occasional snow in midwinter; it rarely stops the trail, but the stages above are a different matter.

Practical tips

  • Above about 2,500-3,000 m, altitude sickness is a risk: climb slowly, and go down if headache, nausea or unusual tiredness get worse. General information, not medical advice.
  • Walk clockwise around mani walls and chortens.
  • Mobile signal is patchy.
