Why go

Shuklaphanta National Park covers a large area of grassland, sal forest, rivers and wetlands in Kanchanpur district, in the far south-western corner of Nepal. Its name comes from the great open grassland, or phanta, at its heart, one of the largest continuous areas of tall Terai grassland left in the country. The park borders India to the south and west, and it is reached easily from the city of Mahendranagar.

The park is best known for its herds of swamp deer, or barasingha, which gather on the grasslands in numbers rarely seen elsewhere. Tigers, leopards, wild elephants, hog deer and spotted deer also live here, and the grasslands are important for birds such as the Bengal florican and many grassland warblers and larks. Small lakes, among them Rani Tal, attract waterbirds and wildlife coming to drink.

Shuklaphanta sees far fewer visitors than Chitwan or Bardiya. Exploring is mostly by jeep along park tracks, with viewing towers at the edge of the grasslands, and the atmosphere is open and quiet. For anyone interested in wildlife in the far west it is the main reason to come to Kanchanpur.

History and culture

The area was once a royal hunting reserve. It was protected as a wildlife reserve in the 1970s and later upgraded to national park status. Its management, like that of other Nepali parks, involves the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation with support from the Nepal Army, and a buffer zone around the park gives local communities a share in conservation and its benefits.

Rani Tal, a lake inside the park, is linked in local tradition to an old fort site and the stories of a Tharu queen. The surrounding villages are home to Rana Tharu and other communities, and to many families who settled the area in recent decades. Their fields border the park, and wildlife damage to crops is a real issue that the buffer zone programmes try to address.
