Why go

Dhangadhi is the largest city in Sudurpashchim Province and the main gateway for travel into the far west of Nepal. It stands on the flat plains of Kailali district, close to the border with India, and is a sub-metropolitan city with markets, government offices, hospitals, colleges and an airport with regular flights from Kathmandu. Most visitors pass through on the way to the hills of Doti, Dadeldhura and beyond, or to Shuklaphanta National Park and the wetlands of Kailali.

The town is not a sightseeing destination in its own right, but it is a practical and friendly base. Its busy bazaar sells everything needed for a trip into the hills, and its restaurants serve both Terai and hill food. Around the edges of the city, villages of mud-walled Tharu houses, mustard and rice fields and patches of forest give a sense of the older landscape of the western Terai.

Roads radiate from Dhangadhi: north to Attariya on the East-West Highway and on into the hills by the road to Dadeldhura and Doti, west to Mahendranagar and Shuklaphanta, and east to Tikapur, Ghodaghodi Tal and Bardiya. A border crossing to India lies a short distance south.

History and culture

Kailali was long heavily forested and thinly settled, with the Tharu as its original inhabitants. Malaria control and resettlement programmes from the second half of the twentieth century brought many hill families down to the plains, and Dhangadhi grew from a small bazaar into a regional centre. Today it is a mix of Tharu, hill Khas and other communities, and Nepali, Doteli and Tharu are all widely spoken.

The Tharu festival calendar, especially Maghi in mid-January, is a good time to see traditional dance, dress and food in and around the city. Dhangadhi also became the capital of Sudurpashchim Province after the 2015 constitution reorganised Nepal into provinces, which has added new institutions and activity to the town.
