Why go

Bhimdatta, still widely known as Mahendranagar, is the headquarters of Kanchanpur district and the largest town in the far south-western corner of Nepal. It lies near the western end of the East-West Highway, close to the Mahakali River which forms the border with India. For travellers it is the natural base for Shuklaphanta National Park, a short drive to the south, and a crossing point for overland journeys to and from India.

The town is spread out on the plains, with a central bazaar, a busy bus park, offices, hospitals and colleges. It has a relaxed, small-city feel. Temples, including the Siddhanath temple, are the main sights in town, and the open countryside around it is a patchwork of farmland, forest and Tharu villages.

To the west, the Mahakali River is crossed at a barrage near the border, and the Indian town of Banbasa lies on the other side. Northwards, roads lead up into the hills of Dadeldhura and Baitadi, making Mahendranagar a starting point for exploring the far-western hills as well as the Terai.

History and culture

The town was named Mahendranagar after King Mahendra and grew as a planned settlement in the second half of the twentieth century, as the Terai was opened up for farming. Its municipality was later renamed Bhimdatta in honour of Bhimdatta Pant, a peasant leader from the far west who campaigned for land rights in the early 1950s and was killed in 1953.

Kanchanpur is home to Rana Tharu communities with their own distinctive dress and customs, as well as many families from the hills who settled here. The town celebrates Maghi, Dashain and Tihar with gusto, and during Shivaratri the Siddhanath temple draws large numbers of pilgrims.
