Why go

Sermathang is a Hyolmo village on the slopes below the forest of Langtang National Park, at the southern end of the Helambu trail. For many trekkers it is the last night before a jeep or bus down to Melamchi Bazaar and Kathmandu, reached after an easy walk from Tarkeghyang.

The village spreads over terraces and orchards, with a gompa and views across the Melamchi valley. In clear weather the Jugal range is visible to the north-east.

History and culture

The people of Sermathang are Hyolmo and speak the Yolmo language. Tourism, farming and seasonal migrant work make up the local economy, and apples and potatoes grow on the terraces around the village. Gravel roads now connect the village with Melamchi Bazaar and Kathmandu, which has made it a common start or finish for shorter Helambu walks. The village lies just below the forest edge of Langtang National Park, so walks above it quickly enter the park.
