Gamgadhi is the headquarters of Mugu district in Karnali Province, a small administrative town in the valley of the Mugu Karnali river. It lies within Chhayanath Rara Municipality, a short distance from Rara National Park and Rara Lake, and is the main service centre for the district, with government offices, a hospital, shops and simple lodges.
For travellers, Gamgadhi matters mainly as a road head. The road branching off the Karnali Highway at Nagma in Kalikot reaches Gamgadhi, and jeeps run on to the Rara area. Overland visitors to Rara often pass through or stay here, and it is also the jumping-off point for the upper Mugu valley, a restricted area of Tibetan Buddhist villages further north.
The town itself is modest, with stone and concrete buildings strung along the slope above the river. The surrounding hills are steep and forested, with terraced fields around the villages, and short walks give a sense of daily life in one of the most remote districts of Nepal.
Mugu was long one of Nepal's least accessible districts, linked to the rest of the country by foot trails and later by flights into Talcha airport near Rara. The extension of the road from the Karnali Highway brought vehicles to Gamgadhi and has gradually changed the economy, making supplies cheaper and opening the district to domestic tourists heading for Rara.
The population around Gamgadhi is mainly Khas Hindu, including Thakuri, Chhetri and Dalit communities, while the upper valleys to the north are home to Buddhist communities with Tibetan language and culture. Seasonal migration to India for work has long been part of life in the district, and many households combine farming with remittance income.
