Nagma is a small bazaar in Kalikot district, Karnali Province, known to travellers as the junction where the road to Gamgadhi in Mugu district branches off the Karnali Highway. Vehicles bound for Rara Lake by road pass through here, while the main highway continues towards Jumla. The bazaar consists of a strip of shops, eateries and simple lodges serving drivers, passengers and people from nearby villages.
There is little to see in Nagma itself, but its position makes it a common place to stop, change vehicles or spend a night on the long overland journey from Surkhet. The setting among steep hills and river valleys is typical of the Karnali region, and the road onwards to Mugu climbs through forest and over ridges with wide views.
For overland visitors to Rara, knowing about Nagma helps with planning: it is where the decision between continuing to Jumla and heading for Mugu is made, and local transport schedules often revolve around it.
Before the roads, Nagma was a village on foot trails through Kalikot. The construction of the Karnali Highway and later the branch road towards Mugu turned it into a transport hub, and the bazaar has grown with the traffic. Its fortunes are tied to the road: when landslides close the route, trade and travel slow down.
The people of the area are mainly Khas Hindu farming communities, and many households combine agriculture with work in transport, trade and seasonal migration. Small temples and shrines in the surrounding villages are the focus of local festivals.
