Lumbini Provinceपरासी
A small Terai district west of the Narayani, known for the Ramgram stupa, one of the original stupas said to hold relics of the Buddha.
Parasi, officially Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta West), occupies the Terai and Churia foothills in the east of Lumbini Province. It borders Rupandehi to the west, Palpa to the north, Nawalpur in Gandaki Province to the east and India to the south. The Narayani river flows along its south-eastern side, and much of the district is flat, fertile farmland with forest in the northern hills.
The district was created when the old Nawalparasi district was divided between Lumbini and Gandaki provinces. Its population includes Tharu, Madhesi, Magar and hill communities, and farming, trade along the highway and small industries support the economy. Ramgram, the headquarters, is known for its brick stupa, traditionally believed to be one of the eight original stupas built over the Buddha's relics. Tribeni, where the Narayani leaves Nepal, is a Hindu pilgrimage site.
