Lumbini Provinceप्युठान
A quiet hill district best known for Swargadwari, a forested hilltop pilgrimage site, and the valleys of the Jhimruk and Mandavi rivers.
Pyuthan lies in the middle hills of Lumbini Province, between Dang to the south and Rolpa to the west, with Arghakhanchi and Gulmi to the east and Baglung to the north. The district is a mix of warm river valleys, notably along the Jhimruk and Mandavi rivers, and forested ridges that climb towards the higher hills in the north.
Magar, Brahmin and Chhetri communities make up much of the population, and farming, livestock and remittances support most households. The headquarters, also called Pyuthan, is a small hill bazaar. The main draw for visitors is Swargadwari, a temple complex on a high forested ridge that has long attracted Hindu pilgrims, particularly around major festivals. Few other travellers come, which suits those looking for simple, unhurried hill walking.

Roads climb north into Pyuthan from the East-West Highway around Bhalubang and from the Dang valley, taking several hours by bus or jeep on hill roads. The nearest airport with regular flights is Nepalgunj; Bhairahawa is another option further east.
October to April is the best period, with clear autumn weather and mild spring days; the monsoon brings heavy rain and landslides on hill roads, and winter is cold on the higher ridges such as Swargadwari.
