Mangalsen is the headquarters of Achham district, a small town on a ridge in the hills of the far west. It is an administrative and market centre rather than a tourist town, but its setting, with terraces falling away on every side and long views across the hills, gives it an appeal of its own.
The town's best-known landmark is the site of the old Mangalsen palace, the seat of the former rulers of Achham, which stands at the top of the town. The bazaar below has shops, offices and simple places to eat, and life moves at the slow pace of a hill town far from the main highways.
For travellers, Mangalsen is a base for exploring Achham, including the lakes and meadows of Ramaroshan and the eastern approaches to Khaptad National Park. Roads link the town with Sanphebagar in the valley below and onward to Doti and the Terai.
Achham was once a small principality ruled from Mangalsen, and the old palace was its seat until the kingdom was absorbed into Gorkhali Nepal. The town keeps the name of the ruling family's era, and the palace site is a reminder of the many small hill states that once divided the far west.
During Nepal's civil war, Mangalsen was the scene of a major Maoist attack in 2002 in which government buildings, including parts of the old palace complex, were destroyed and many members of the security forces were killed. The town has since been rebuilt. The people of Achham are mostly Khas communities, and Deuda songs and the Gaura festival are central to local culture.
