Sanphebagar is a bazaar town in the valley of the Budhiganga river in western Achham, and the busiest transport hub in the district. It has an airstrip with domestic flights, a bus park, shops and services, and roads from here climb to Mangalsen and other parts of Achham and lead west into Doti and on to the Terai.
The town is warm and spread along the valley floor, with terraced hills rising on both sides. It is not a sightseeing destination in itself, but it is the practical gateway for travellers heading to the lakes and meadows of Ramaroshan, to Mangalsen and to the eastern side of Khaptad National Park. Sanphebagar is also known in Nepal for the hospital at nearby Bayalpata, which serves a wide area of the far west.
A night here is often part of journeys through Achham, and the riverside and bazaar make for a pleasant evening stroll.
Bagar is a common word in western Nepal for flat land beside a river, and the town grew on this riverside flat as a trading point for the surrounding hills. Its importance rose with the building of roads and the airstrip, which linked Achham more directly with the rest of the country.
The people of the area are mainly Khas communities, with Dalit and other groups, and Doteli and its Achhami variety are spoken. Deuda songs, Gaura and the fairs of local goddess shrines are part of the cultural year, and the Sanphebagar bazaar is a meeting place for villagers coming down from the hills to trade.
