Town or village
Pyuthan Khalanga
The quiet hill headquarters of Pyuthan district, with old temples, a ridge-side bazaar and views over terraced valleys.
बिजुवार
The main market town of Pyuthan district, a busy bazaar in a river valley on the road from Dang.
Bijuwar is the largest market town in Pyuthan district, a commercial hub set in a valley below the district headquarters at Khalanga. Buses from Dang and further afield arrive here, and the town's shops, wholesale traders and workshops supply villages across the surrounding hills.
For travellers it is mostly a transport and supply point: the place to change buses, find a meal, use a bank or pick up a jeep to Khalanga, Swargadwari or the more remote villages. The valley around is farmed with rice and maize, and the bazaar is lively in the mornings when people come in from the hills.
There are no major monuments, but a walk through the market and along the river gives a clear picture of how mid-hill bazaars in western Nepal work.
Bijuwar grew as roads reached Pyuthan from the Terai and the Rapti valley, drawing trade away from older hilltop settlements towards the valley floor. As in many hill districts, the market town has become larger and busier than the administrative headquarters above it.
Travellers heading to Swargadwari or to the villages of northern Pyuthan often spend a night in Bijuwar, which has more lodging and food choices than most places in the district. The town is also a sensible place to ask locally about road conditions, jeep departures and festival dates before setting off into the hills.
The town's population is drawn from the communities of the district, including Magar, Chhetri, Brahmin, Newar traders and Dalit artisan groups, and the main festivals are Dashain, Tihar, Teej and Maghe Sankranti.
