An industrial and agricultural Terai district centred on Biratnagar, the capital of Koshi Province and a key gateway to eastern Nepal.
Morang lies in the eastern Terai of Koshi Province, bordering the Indian state of Bihar to the south. Sunsari lies to the west, Jhapa to the east, and the hills of Dhankuta and Ilam rise to the north. Most of the district is flat, fertile plain, crossed by rivers flowing down from the Churia range, while its northern edge climbs into the foothills and lower mid-hills.
Biratnagar, the district headquarters and provincial capital, is one of Nepal's largest cities and its oldest industrial centre, with jute mills and factories dating back to the early twentieth century. Rice, jute and sugarcane are grown widely. Tharu, Rajbanshi, Dhimal, Santhal, Maithili-speaking and hill communities live here. Travellers usually use Morang as a transit hub, though Biratnagar has a lively market and some temples.
