Why go

Baglung Bazaar is the headquarters of Baglung district, built on a wide, fairly level terrace high above the west bank of the Kali Gandaki. It is the main market and service town for a large area of the western Gandaki hills, and the road from Pokhara through Nayapul and Kusma ends its main run here before branching on towards Beni and Myagdi. For travellers it is mostly a junction and an overnight stop, but the town has enough of interest to fill a relaxed half day.

The best-known sight is the Kalika Bhagawati temple, set in a grove of trees at the edge of the bazaar and visited by pilgrims from across the region. The town is also a good base for seeing the long pedestrian suspension bridges that cross the Kali Gandaki gorge towards Parbat, a type of structure for which Baglung district is widely known. On clear mornings in autumn and winter, Dhaulagiri and neighbouring peaks can be seen to the north.

From Baglung, roads continue north to Beni and the Kali Gandaki route to Mustang, and west towards Burtibang and the long approach to the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve. The bazaar has hotels, eateries, banks and transport offices, and it makes a practical place to break a journey between Pokhara and the western hills.

History and culture

Before the unification of Nepal, the Baglung area lay within the hill kingdom of Parbat, one of the small principalities of the Chaubisi group in the western hills, and the Kalika temple is associated in local tradition with its rulers. The town later grew as an administrative and trading centre, and its role increased once the highway from Pokhara reached it.

Magar, Chhantyal, Gurung, Thakali and Brahmin-Chhetri families live in and around the bazaar, and many local households have relatives working abroad or serving in the armed forces. Dashain is the biggest festival of the year, when the Kalika temple draws large crowds, and Tihar and Teej are also widely celebrated.
