Chitwan & Teraiरेसुङ्गा
A forested hill above Tamghas, sacred to Hindus and Buddhists, with views across Gulmi to the Himalaya.
Resunga is the forested hill that rises above Tamghas, the headquarters of Gulmi district, and the best-known natural and religious site in the district. Its upper slopes are covered in protected forest, and the summit area holds temples and a sacred spring that draw pilgrims throughout the year.
On clear days the ridge gives wide views north to the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges and over the folded hills of Gulmi, Arghakhanchi and Palpa. The walk up from Tamghas through forest makes a good half-day outing, and the hill is a popular spot for local families and school trips as well as pilgrims.
The forest is home to birds, langur monkeys and other wildlife, and in spring parts of it are lit by rhododendron. Visitors should bring water and snacks, set out early and allow time to linger at the top.
Hindu tradition associates Resunga with the sage Kashyapa, who is said to have meditated on the hill, and the name is often explained as a form of rishi shringa, the sage's peak. The temples on the summit are a focus of festivals, especially at Dashain and during the full-moon fairs.
Some Buddhists also identify the hill with Kashyapa Buddha, one of the Buddhas said to have preceded Gautama, which gives the site importance for followers of both traditions. The hill has been protected as forest, and local committees manage the paths and religious sites. On festival days the summit fills with families who climb up to worship, picnic and enjoy the view, and the atmosphere is cheerful rather than solemn.
