A remote high-altitude lake near the Sikkim border in Panchthar, sacred to Limbu and Hindu pilgrims.
फिदिम
The hill headquarters of Panchthar on the Mechi Highway, a Limbu heartland town between Ilam and Taplejung.
Phidim is the headquarters of Panchthar district and the main town on the Mechi Highway between Ilam and Taplejung. It spreads over a hillside in the eastern middle hills, with a bazaar of shops, small hotels, offices and bus stands that serve a large area of farming villages, and it is a natural overnight stop for travellers driving north towards Taplejung and the Kanchenjunga region.
The town itself is a working district centre rather than a resort, but it gives a good sense of everyday life in the far east of Nepal. The surrounding hills are farmed in terraces of maize, millet and rice, with cardamom in the shaded valleys and tea and broom grass on some slopes, and short walks out of the bazaar quickly lead into countryside.
Phidim also makes a base for exploring Panchthar's higher country to the east, including the ridges along the border with Sikkim and the sacred lake of Timbung Pokhari, which are reached by rough roads and on foot.
Panchthar lies in Limbuwan, the historic homeland of the Limbu people, and the district's name is often explained as referring to five Limbu clans or territories. Limbu language, the Sirijanga script and Kirat Mundhum traditions remain part of public life, and festivals such as Chasok Tangnam and Kirat rituals are celebrated alongside Dashain and Tihar.
Phidim grew as the administrative centre of the district, and the building of the Mechi Highway north from the Terai through Ilam made it a stage on the main road to Taplejung. Brahmin, Chhetri, Rai and other communities also live in the area.
