Why go

Palpa is a hill district of Lumbini Province in the Mahabharat range, covering about 1,373 square kilometres between the Terai plains around Butwal and the Kali Gandaki valley to the north. The Siddhartha Highway between Butwal and Pokhara runs through it, so Palpa makes a natural stop on the way between Lumbini and Pokhara. Its landscape is one of forested ridges, terraced fields and deep river valleys, with distant views of the Himalaya from the higher points.

Places grouped under Palpa include Tansen, the district headquarters, an old Newar bazaar town of steep lanes, temples and the Srinagar Hill viewpoint, known for dhaka weaving and brassware; and Rani Mahal, a Rana-era palace on a rock bank of the Kali Gandaki, often called the Taj Mahal of Nepal, reached by a long walk or a drive from Tansen.

Beyond these, the district offers Ridi Bazaar, a Hindu pilgrimage town at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Ridi Khola that hosts a large fair at Maghe Sankranti; the Bhairabsthan temple on a ridge east of Tansen; and Magar villages where homestays give a look at rural hill life.

The story

Rani Mahal, sometimes called the Taj Mahal of Nepal, was built on the bank of the Kali Gandaki in the 1890s by General Khadga Shumsher Rana in memory of his wife, Tej Kumari. It stands at the end of a forest trail below Tansen.

History and culture

From the 16th century Palpa was the seat of a powerful hill kingdom ruled by the Sen dynasty, which for a time was among the strongest states in the central hills. It was absorbed into the expanding Kingdom of Nepal in the early 19th century, and Tansen grew into a trading bazaar settled by Newar merchants on the route between India and Tibet along the Kali Gandaki. Rana governors later left their mark with palaces, including Rani Mahal and Tansen Durbar.

Palpa is the only district of Nepal where Magars form a majority of the population, around half, and Magar language and culture are strong in its villages alongside Brahmin, Chhetri, Newar and Dalit communities. Palpa is famous for dhaka cloth, Palpali brass and copper work, and dishes such as chukauni (a potato and yoghurt salad). Major festivals include Dashain, Tihar and the Maghe Sankranti fair at Ridi.
