Why go

Lama Hotel is not a single hotel but a small settlement of around twenty buildings, most of them lodges, in the forested gorge of the Langtang Khola. It lies about a day's walk above Syabrubesi and is the usual first overnight stop on the Langtang Valley trek, and again the usual stop on the way down.

The setting is enclosed and green, with oak, maple, rhododendron and bamboo on the steep valley sides and the river loud below. This stretch of forest is known for red pandas and grey langur monkeys, although sightings are a matter of luck. Above Lama Hotel the trail climbs out of the trees towards Ghoda Tabela and the open upper valley.

History and culture

The settlement grew around trekking, with families from Tamang villages in the Langtang area running the lodges. It lies inside Langtang National Park, Nepal's first Himalayan national park, established in 1976. The lower Langtang trail was damaged by landslides in the 2015 earthquake and has been rebuilt and in places rerouted.

Risks and conditions

Seasonal risks around Lama Hotel

What this place is typically exposed to, and when. These are seasonal patterns, not a report on conditions now.

  • Landslideshigh in a typical yearJun-Sep

The Langtang gorge is geologically active and the main trail was rerouted after the 2015 earthquake; monsoon rain loosens the slopes, so slide-prone sections are best crossed without lingering.

  • Othermoderate in a typical yearJun-Sep

From June to August the forest trails are slippery after rain, leeches are common and the mountains are usually hidden by cloud.

    Langtang National Park (Wikivoyage)

  • Coldmoderate in a typical yearDec-Feb

December to February nights are near or below freezing at these altitudes and lodges are lightly heated; bring a warm sleeping bag and down layers.

    Langtang National Park (Wikivoyage)

  • Snowlow in a typical yearJan-Feb

Localised snowfall is reported in January and February. At this altitude it rarely lies for long, but it can slow the trails and roads higher up the valley.

Check current conditions before you travel

Roads, trails, passes and flights change with the weather and with roadworks, and nothing on this page describes conditions today. Before you set off, check the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology for weather and flood warnings, the Nepal Disaster Risk Reduction Portal for incidents, and the local authority, police or your licensed operator for road, trail and flight status.

Practical tips

  • Mobile signal is weak or absent in the gorge.
  • Charging is usually possible for a small fee; carry a power bank.
  • Do not feed monkeys or leave food outside.
  • Above about 2,500-3,000 m, altitude sickness is a risk: climb slowly, and go down if headache, nausea or unusual tiredness get worse. General information, not medical advice.
