Lamidanda is a hill village in the west of Khotang district, best known for its small domestic airstrip laid out along a long, narrow ridge. The name means 'long ridge' in Nepali, and the setting explains it: the runway runs along the crest, with steep slopes falling away on both sides towards the river valleys. Around the airstrip a modest settlement of shops, teahouses and houses serves passengers, farmers and people travelling on to other parts of the district.
For visitors, Lamidanda is mainly a gateway. It is one of the nearer air links to the Halesi-Maratika caves, the cave shrine sacred to Hindus and Buddhists in the south of Khotang, and from the ridge travellers continue by jeep or on foot. Those who stay a little longer find a quiet rural landscape of terraced fields, scattered farmhouses and forest patches, with long views across the hills and, in clear autumn and winter weather, glimpses of high peaks to the north.
Facilities are simple, and the village is best treated as a stopover or a short base rather than a destination in itself.
The ridges of western Khotang are home mainly to Rai communities, together with Chhetri, Brahmin, Magar and other groups. Farming is the main livelihood, with maize, millet and rice grown on terraces cut into the hillsides. As in much of eastern Nepal, the Kirat traditions of the Rai shape village life, including seasonal worship and Sakela dances in spring and early winter.
The airstrip was built to connect this roadless part of the eastern hills with Kathmandu at a time when walking was the only alternative, and it brought trade and services to the surrounding villages. Road building since then has reduced the area's reliance on flights, but the airstrip remains a landmark and a reference point for the area.
