Why go

Okhaldhunga is the headquarters town of Okhaldhunga district in Koshi Province, and the main bazaar of Siddhicharan Municipality. It lies on a hillside in the middle hills of eastern Nepal, south of the Solu area of Solukhumbu and north of the Sun Koshi valley. The town spreads along a slope of stone-paved lanes, older two- and three-storey houses, newer concrete buildings, government offices and schools, and it remains the market and service centre for a wide farming area.

Visitors come here mostly on the way to somewhere else, such as the trekking areas of Solu to the north, but the town rewards an unhurried day. The older lanes of the bazaar keep a traditional feel, small shrines sit between houses, and the surrounding ridges offer walks through terraced fields and forest. On clear days after the monsoon and in winter, the higher points around town give views to the snow peaks of the Himalaya to the north.

Okhaldhunga is also a practical stop: it has transport, simple lodging, shops and health services, and links by road to the Rumjatar airstrip below and to roads heading north towards Salleri.

History and culture

The municipality takes its name from Siddhicharan Shrestha, the Nepali poet born in Okhaldhunga who was later honoured with the title Yuga Kavi, 'poet of the era'. His association with the town is a point of local pride, and his poems, including verses about his birthplace, are widely taught in Nepal.

Okhaldhunga has long been an administrative seat in the eastern hills, and the bazaar grew as a trading post where hill farmers exchanged grain, ghee and other produce for goods carried up from the plains. The district is home to a mix of communities, including Rai, Sherpa, Magar, Tamang, Newar, Chhetri and Brahmin families, so Hindu temples, Buddhist sites and Kirat traditions all form part of local life. Newar traders in particular shaped the older bazaar, and Dashain, Tihar and other Hindu festivals are celebrated alongside Buddhist and Kirat observances in the surrounding villages.
