Ilamमाई पोखरी
A small forest-ringed lake north of Ilam bazaar, a Ramsar wetland and a pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists.
Mai Pokhari is a wetland of about 90 hectares in the hills about 15 km north of Ilam bazaar, at around 2,100 m. At its centre is a lake roughly 1 km around, with dark, still water, surrounded by dense forest of chestnut, schima, oak and rhododendron. It is the best-known excursion from the town of Ilam and is easily combined with the tea gardens and viewpoints of the district.
The wetland formed through ground subsidence and is fed by springs and rain; it is also a source of drinking water for nearby villages. It was designated a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in October 2008, and around 300 bird species have been recorded in the area. A botanical garden on the edge of the lake has a rock garden, an orchid house and plants collected from across eastern Nepal.
A walk around the shore takes about an hour, past small shrines and prayer flags. Mornings are often misty and quiet, while festival days bring crowds of pilgrims.
The lake is regarded as the dwelling of a mother goddess, and Mai, in its name, refers to her. Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims come to worship at the temple on the shore, and a fair is held at the lake during the autumn festival season, when devotees light lamps around the water. Local people traditionally describe the lake as having nine corners. Swimming, fishing and boating for fun are discouraged because of the site's religious and ecological importance; a conservation code of conduct is in place and community forest user groups help manage the surrounding forest.
