This is Garuda, a town in Rautahat district, Nepal; the name is also that of the mythical bird of Hindu tradition.
Higher seasonal exposure: flooding (Jun-Sep).
Garuda is a market town and municipality in central Rautahat district, on the road that runs south from Chandrapur on the East-West Highway to Gaur near the Indian border. It serves a wide area of farming villages, and its bazaar is where people from the surrounding countryside come to trade, shop and catch transport.
There are no major monuments, but the town is a reasonable halfway stop for travellers exploring rural Rautahat, and its weekly markets and temples give a sense of everyday Madhesi life. In the cooler months the fields around the town are green with wheat and mustard, and in the monsoon they are flooded for rice.
Travellers who come here usually do so as part of a journey through the district, combining Chandrapur, Garuda and Gaur in a north-south trip across the plains.
Central Rautahat is predominantly Madhesi, with Bhojpuri and Bajjika widely spoken, and with hill and Tharu communities in parts of the district. The festival calendar includes Chhath, Holi, Dashain, Tihar and Eid.
The town grew as a local market centre on the road linking the highway with the district headquarters, and became the core of a municipality in the restructuring of local government in the late 2010s.
As across Rautahat, the rhythm of life follows the agricultural year, and monsoon flooding from rivers draining the Chure hills shapes settlement patterns and farming. Visitors are uncommon, and the town offers a straightforward, unvarnished view of a working Terai bazaar, with tea stalls, grain merchants, tailors and bicycle repair shops along the main road.
