Chitwan & Teraiवीरगञ्ज
Nepal's main trade gateway with India, a busy border city opposite Raxaul and a base for Parsa National Park.
Birgunj is a metropolitan city in Parsa district and the largest border crossing for trade between Nepal and India. It sits directly opposite Raxaul in Bihar, and a large share of Nepal's imports pass through its customs point and the dry port at nearby Sirsiya. The city is often called the gateway of Nepal.
For travellers, Birgunj is mainly a place to cross the border or break a journey between Kathmandu and the Indian plains. It also makes a practical base for Parsa National Park to the north, for the heritage sites of Bara district such as Gadhimai Temple and Simraungadh, and for the Gahawa Mai temple within the city.
The centre is crowded and commercial, with a main road lined with shops, wholesale markets and banks. Landmarks include a clock tower in the centre and a large ornamental gateway on the road into the city. Mornings and evenings are the best times to explore, when the heat is lower and the markets are at their busiest.
The city takes its name from the Rana prime minister Bir Shumsher, under whom it developed in the late nineteenth century as a trade and administrative centre. The arrival of a railway from the Indian side and later the Tribhuvan Rajpath and the highway through Hetauda made it the main link between the Kathmandu Valley and India.
Birgunj is a Bhojpuri-speaking city with a mix of Madhesi, Pahadi, Marwari and Muslim communities. Chhath, Holi, Dashain and Eid are all widely celebrated, and the city's temples and ponds become crowded during festivals.
Trade defines the city's character. Trucks queue on the roads to the border and the dry port, and the city's markets supply goods to much of central Nepal.
