A sacred garden in Siraha associated with the Maithili folk hero Raja Salhesh, the focus of a spring fair.
Salhesh Phulbari is a garden and shrine in Siraha district associated with Raja Salhesh, a legendary king and folk hero of the Mithila region. The phulbari, or flower garden, is said to be the place where Salhesh met the garden maidens, the malinis, who feature in his stories, and it is one of the most important sites connected with his cult.
The garden contains old trees, shrines to Salhesh and his companions, and an open area where gatherings are held. It is quiet for most of the year, but at the start of the Nepali new year in mid-April a large fair takes place, drawing devotees and visitors from across the eastern Terai and from Bihar. Local belief holds that a particular tree in the garden flowers at this time, and its blooming is taken as an omen for the coming year.
Salhesh Phulbari lies within reach of Lahan and can be visited as a short trip from the highway.
Raja Salhesh is celebrated in Maithili oral epic as a righteous king and protector, and is especially revered by the Dusadh community, for whom he is a cultural hero and deity. His stories are performed in songs and dramas, and clay images of Salhesh and his companions are made for village shrines across Mithila.
The Salhesh tradition has gained wider recognition in recent decades as part of the cultural revival of the Madhesh, and the fair at the phulbari has become a symbol of Maithili and Dalit heritage.
Mithila painters often depict Salhesh, his horse and the malinis, and visitors with an interest in the art form will find that the story behind the garden enriches their understanding of the region's painting traditions.
