Basantapur

म्याङलुङ
The ridge-top headquarters of Terhathum, a Limbu town known across Nepal for its hand-woven dhaka cloth.
Myanglung is the headquarters of Terhathum district, a small hill town on a ridge in the eastern middle hills, north-east of Dhankuta. It is the commercial and administrative centre for the district's villages, with a compact bazaar, offices, schools and a bus park, and it is reached by road from the Koshi Highway area around Basantapur and Hile.
Terhathum is famous in Nepal for dhaka, the patterned hand-woven cloth used for the Dhaka topi, the traditional cap, and for shawls and blouses. Weaving is done in homes and small workshops in and around Myanglung, and the bazaar is a good place to see looms at work and to buy cloth made locally rather than machine copies.
The town also gives access to the green hills around it, with views on clear days across the Tamor valley, and is a staging point for walks towards the Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale rhododendron ridges to the north.
Accommodation and food are simple, and the town sees few foreign visitors, so expect curiosity and a warm welcome rather than tourist services.
Myanglung lies in Limbuwan, the homeland of the Limbu people, and Limbu culture is strong here: the language, Kirat Mundhum traditions and festivals such as Chasok Tangnam are part of town life, and the Limbu dhan nach (paddy dance) is performed at gatherings. Newar, Brahmin, Chhetri, Rai and other communities also live in the district.
Dhaka weaving in Terhathum has grown from a household craft into a significant local industry, and the cloth has become a symbol of Nepali dress. Local and provincial organisations have worked to promote genuine Terhathum dhaka and the weavers who make it.
