Why go

Jajarkot Durbar is the old palace of the rulers of Jajarkot, a small hill kingdom of western Nepal, standing in Khalanga, the headquarters town of Jajarkot district in Karnali Province. The palace is the most notable historical building in the district and reflects the period when Jajarkot was a semi-autonomous principality within the Nepali state.

The building combines traditional hill construction in stone and timber with later additions, and it is set within the bazaar rather than apart from it. Its condition and accessibility to visitors vary, as parts of the complex have been used for other purposes and some were damaged by the 2023 earthquake. It is best treated as a heritage landmark to see from outside and to ask about locally.

A visit takes little time, but for travellers interested in the history of the far west of Nepal it adds depth to a stay in Khalanga. It combines naturally with walks in the bazaar and down towards the Bheri river.

History and culture

Jajarkot was ruled by a Shah dynasty and was one of the hill states of western Nepal that survived the unification of the country as a rajya, keeping local authority under the central government. The rulers lived in the palace in Khalanga and administered the surrounding territory until the rajya system was abolished in the early 1960s.

Like other former royal palaces in Nepal's hill districts, the durbar is a symbol of local identity, and members of the former ruling family have remained prominent in local politics and society. Festivals such as Dashain historically had a ceremonial role centred on the palace, and some of these traditions continue in modified form.
