Why go

Ghorahi is the headquarters of Dang district and the largest city of the Dang valley, a wide inner Terai valley enclosed by the Siwalik and Mahabharat hills in Lumbini Province. It is a growing commercial and educational centre with markets, colleges, hospitals and a lively bazaar, and a natural stopping point between the plains and the hill districts of Rolpa, Rukum and Salyan.

The valley floor around the city is broad, flat and fertile, with rice, wheat and mustard fields and Tharu villages, while forested hills rise on all sides. In the cooler months the light is clear and the surrounding ridges make for good short walks and drives.

Visitors usually come to Ghorahi for its religious sites, especially the Ratannath shrine at Chaughera and the Ambikeshwari temple, and to experience Tharu culture in the valley villages. It is also a useful base for exploring Tulsipur and the wider Dang and Deukhuri valleys.

History and culture

The Dang valley is one of the historic heartlands of the Dangaura Tharu, whose language, villages and festivals still shape the countryside around Ghorahi. Over the past century large numbers of hill people have settled in the valley, and the city now has a mixed population.

Religious life in Ghorahi is linked to the Nath yogi tradition through the Ratannath shrine at Chaughera, and to the goddess Ambikeshwari, whose temple draws crowds during Dashain. The area was also affected by the Maoist conflict of 1996-2006, as Dang lies at the edge of the hill districts where the insurgency began; today the city has a settled and expanding economy.
