Dipayal Silgadhi
The twin towns of Doti: Dipayal by the Seti River and old Silgadhi on the ridge above, gateway to Khaptad.
The historic heart of the far west, home to Dipayal Silgadhi on the Seti and the high meadows of Khaptad National Park.
Doti lies in the hills at the centre of Sudurpashchim, with Achham to the east, Bajhang to the north, Baitadi and Dadeldhura to the west and Kailali to the south. The Seti River flows through the district in a broad valley, where the twin towns of Dipayal and Silgadhi face each other across the river. From there the land climbs to forested ridges and, in the north-east, to the high plateau of Khaptad National Park.
Doti was once the seat of a powerful hill kingdom, and its name is still used for the wider far-western region and its Doteli language. Most people are Khas Chhetri, Brahmin and Dalit communities who farm terraced slopes and work seasonally in India. Travellers come mainly to walk up to Khaptad, with its grassy meadows, forests and ashram, and to visit the old temples around Silgadhi.

Temple, monastery or heritage site
The guardian goddess temple of Doti in the old ridge-top bazaar of Silgadhi.
Doti is reached by road from Dhangadhi in the Terai, climbing through the hills to Dipayal Silgadhi in most of a day. The nearest airport with regular flights from Kathmandu is Dhangadhi. Khaptad National Park is reached on foot from roadheads in the district, usually over a couple of days.
Spring and autumn are best, with spring flowers on the Khaptad meadows; the monsoon brings rain and leeches to the trails, and winter can bring snow on the plateau while the Seti valley stays mild.
