Chitwan & Teraiबर्दिबास
A highway junction town at the foot of the Chure hills, where the BP Highway from Kathmandu meets the East-West Highway.
Bardibas is a fast-growing town in the north of Mahottari district, at the foot of the Chure hills. It is the junction where the BP Koirala Highway, which climbs north through Sindhuli to Dhulikhel and Kathmandu, meets the East-West Highway, and roads also lead south to Janakpur and Jaleshwar.
For most travellers Bardibas is a transport stop: buses between Kathmandu and the eastern Terai pass through, and it is a convenient place to change for Janakpur. The bazaar along the highway is lined with eateries, shops and bus counters, and is busy at all hours.
The town also gives easy access to the forested Chure hills and to Sindhuli to the north, where the old fort of Sindhuli Gadhi stands above the BP Highway. Bardibas can be a practical overnight stop when breaking a long journey between Kathmandu, Janakpur and eastern Nepal.
Bardibas grew from a small settlement into a significant town with the building of the East-West Highway and, later, the BP Koirala Highway, which shortened the road journey between Kathmandu and the eastern Terai considerably. It is now the main town of Bardibas Municipality.
The population mixes Maithili-speaking Madhesi communities from the plains with hill settlers, including Tamang, Magar and Brahmin-Chhetri families, reflecting its position where the hills meet the Terai.
A railway linking the town to the wider network has long been planned as part of the proposed east-west railway, though progress has been slow. For now the town remains a road hub, and its character is shaped by the steady flow of buses, trucks and travellers through the bazaar.
