Why go

Ajaymerukot is a historic hilltop site in Dadeldhura district, where the remains of an old fort and royal settlement lie scattered along a forested ridge. It is remembered as one of the early seats of the rulers of Doti, the kingdom that controlled much of the far west before the Gorkhali conquest. Stone foundations, walls and carved fragments are spread across the site, and a temple stands among them.

The site is not developed for tourism, which gives it a quiet and evocative character. Visitors walk among the ruins and the trees, take in the views over the surrounding valleys and try to picture the hill court that once stood here. It is of most interest to travellers who enjoy history and walking, and it is best visited with a local guide who can point out the main features.

The area around the ruins has been named Ajaymeru rural municipality, reflecting the importance of the site to local identity.

History and culture

The history of the far west is less well documented than that of the Kathmandu Valley. Local tradition and historians link Ajaymerukot with the Raika (Rainka) kings of Doti, who ruled from forts in the hills between the Karnali and Mahakali rivers in the medieval period and later moved their capital to other centres. The kingdom came to an end when Gorkhali forces took the region in the late eighteenth century.

Archaeological work in the far west has drawn attention to Ajaymerukot as one of the region's key heritage sites, and there have been calls to protect and study it more fully. Visitors should treat the ruins with care: do not climb on walls, move stones or remove anything from the site.
